Mysterium 2020: From One Washington to Another…

Shorah everyone!

As we mentioned in our Mysterium 2019 Wrap Up, plans for Mysterium 2020 have been in the works. In the time since the committee departed Spokane, we have been hard at work nailing everything down. We are now excited to announce what everyone has been waiting for: Mysterium 2020!

Where is Mysterium 2020?

As hinted at by our post’s title, Mysterium will be held in Washington, DC for the first time ever!

Washington, DC offers a robust transportation system to connect visitors from a multitude of airports and train stations to downtown and the suburbs. Featuring free admission to museums and other attractions, the capital will have something to offer everyone in attendance this year.

When is Mysterium 2020?

As mentioned in the previous wrap ups, the dates for Mysterium 2020 are still being decided. While we intend to choose a specific weekend by mid-October, we can say that Mysterium will be held on a Friday through Sunday during late-July or early-August.

This past year, Sunday’s schedule was extended to accommodate all of the events we had planned, especially Saturday’s trip to Cyan. Mysterium 2020 will be returning to our traditional schedule, ending midday on Sunday (historically, around 1:00 PM).

Planning and outreach is well underway. Please watch for another announcement in the coming weeks with our selected weekend. The primary goal informing all our upcoming logistical decisions, including date selection, is to ensure Mysterium 2020 is accessible and fun for everyone.

Who’s Running Mysterium 2020?

This year’s Mysterium will be headed by no less than three con chairs! Longtime committee members Capella and Drew will be joined by a relative newcomer, Dan. Nicknamed the Mysterium Triumvirate, they hope to combine their enthusiasm and Myst and community knowledge to make one of the best Mysterium conventions yet. Following Mysterium 2019’s great success, they are eager to take on the challenge and wish Taniith the best as he takes a well deserved rest after his hard work this past year.

We also know that many of you are eagerly awaiting more Mysterium 2019 recordings on our YouTube channel. There is still a lot of footage to get through, but we will make the recordings available as soon as we are able to. We thank you for your patience!

Be sure to follow @MysteriumCon on Twitter, the Mysterium Facebook Page, or our Discord server for Mysterium 2020 updates. We can’t wait to share more with you over the coming weeks and months!

Know Before You Go: Mysterium 2019 Edition

Greetings everyone!

We’re only one week away from the start of Mysterium 2019! To get everyone off on the right foot, here’s a roundup of what to expect when you get to Spokane.

At The Hotel

Check out our Location page for info on how to get to Mysterium. The convention will be in the Ruby River Hotel’s Shoreline Ballroom.

If you are planning to take the hotel’s airport shuttle, they recommend calling the front desk (509-326-5577) ahead of time to give them your flight information. While this is not required, it can potentially reduce your wait time at the airport if they know roughly when to expect you.

Please note that both the main hotel and overflow hotel are completely full for the weekend.

Registration

If you pre-registered, registration is easy. Just come to the reg desk, give us your last name, and we’ll look you up. You do not need to bring a printout of your registration confirmation. Once you’re checked in, we’ll give you your badge, a lanyard, and any swag, shirts, or coloring books that you purchased or were included with your registration.

If you are a minor or are attending with a minor, don’t forget to fill out a parental consent form. Copies will also be available at the registration desk.

If you missed pre-registration and are planning to register on-site on Friday morning, a limited number of badges may be available. Please wait until we get through the queue of pre-registered individuals. We will then accept walk-ins, if space is available.

Please note that your badge must be worn at all times when in the convention space, and your (English/surface) name must be visible.

What to Wear

Spokane is hot, sunny, and dry in the summer, so dress accordingly and remember to stay hydrated. In the event of unexpected rain or thunderstorms, you may wish to pack an umbrella or raincoat. Most of our time at Cyan on Saturday will be spent outside, so we recommend sunscreen, sunglasses, goggles, or other sun protection you might need.

Looking for more ideas of what to pack? A more detailed packing list is available on the Mysterium 2019 FAQ page.

What to Do

You can find our schedule of activities on our schedule page. All major activities will be located in the Shoreline Ballroom, while autograph sessions and VR demos will be in the Clearwater Room.

We’ve also posted a map of nearby food and attractions that may interest you on the Location page. Many food options are within walking distance. Delivery is also available from restaurants directly, or via apps like Grubhub or UberEats. You can check with the front desk to see if they have any delivery menus or recommendations. Just don’t bring your food into the convention room or eat it in the hotel’s public spaces!

Keep In Touch

The Mysterium Discord server makes for a great way to communicate and coordinate with other attendees. In addition to the general #mysterium-2019 channel, we’ll provide some additional channels for on-site announcements, meal planning, and excursions. This may be especially useful for anyone who arrives early or is staying in town after Sunday.

If you need to get the attention of Mysterium staff in a hurry, you can mention “@Mysterium Staff” to notify us.

Policies & Reporting Problems

Please remember to review our policies and code of conduct before arriving at the convention. Copies will also be available at the registration desk. Remember that we have a zero tolerance policy for harassment of any kind.

If you witness any problems or feel you have been a victim of harassment, please find a Mysterium staff member and let us know. You can also use this page to submit a report: https://mysterium.net/harassment/.

That’s all for today. We hope this post is helpful as you prepare for your trip. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

We look forward to seeing all of you next week!

Two More Weeks!

Greetings all

It seems like just yesterday we posted that there were six weeks until Mysterium, and yet here we are, only two weeks away from Mysterium 2019! Are you ready? Excited? We can’t wait!

With Mysterium just around the corner, we have some updates and reminders for you. Let’s jump right in!

A Beautiful Surprise…

To kick things off, we have a beautiful surprise! Early-bird registrants will receive the below patch when they check in:

These patches were designed by our very own Taniith. We only have enough of these exclusive patches for early-bird registrants, but we have something else for everyone:

Early-birds each get a full set of pins for free, but everyone is welcome to buy more pins (while supplies last). The lamp pin was designed by “Moiety Jean” Fioca, while the four Obduction pins were designed by Xemylixa.

Reminder: Topics and Questions for Panels

This year, Mysterium has a number of panels with our special guests on the schedule. To help make those a success, we’d love to hear your ideas, questions, or topics of interest for our panelists to discuss or answer. If you have some, please send them along using this form. You’re more than welcome to submit as many ideas as you’d like.

Open Mic Night

Last year we ran a very successful event called Mysterium Showtunes, and this year we’re expanding on the concept with our Open Mic Night on Saturday evening. Whether it’s a poem, a song re-written in the original D’ni, or a love ballad between Atrus and Catherine, we’d love to hear what you can come up with! The possibilities are endless.

While there will be some time before the event to write something, if you’re interested in participating we encourage you to create your material in advance. Not sure where to start? Take a look back at last year’s award winning performances on YouTube or peruse our collection of lyrics.

If you would like music in the background, please either have a copy of it ready or located on a service like Spotify or Apple Music. Also, be sure to practice with the music! It’s not always as easy as you might think.

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve compiled a list of FAQs and useful information to know on our Mysterium 2019 FAQ page. This page has more detailed information about autographs, the logistics of our trip to Cyan, and more, so we encourage everyone to take a look.

On a related note, if you have a costume you would like to wear during the weekend, we encourage you to wear it on Saturday. After all, Cyan HQ makes for an excellent costume parade venue! Please note that much of the visit to Cyan will be outdoors, so plan accordingly.

That’s it for today’s update. We can’t wait to see you all in just a few short weeks!

Mysterium 2019: The Return to Spokane

Greetings!

It’s time for everyone’s favorite post of the year: the Mysterium kickoff! If you missed our previous announcement, we are excited to bring Mysterium back to the home of Cyan — Spokane, WA — for Mysterium 2019. This year’s Mysterium will be chaired by Taniith.

When is Mysterium 2019?

Mysterium 2019 will be held on the first weekend of August, running from Friday, August 2nd through Sunday, August 4th.

We have many exciting events planned for you all this year. However, in order to accommodate everything, we have decided to extend Sunday’s schedule. This year, Sunday (and, thus, the Convention) will end at 4 PM, giving us about four more hours for activities. We want to make sure everyone is aware of this change before you begin making travel plans. Please be sure to spread the word!

20 Years of Mysterium

It’s hard to believe, but this year marks 20 years of Mysterium! As such, we felt it would only be appropriate to make Mysterium 2019’s theme: “Mysterium Through the Ages.” We’ll also feature some additional elements from Ahnonay. Who doesn’t love some time magic (and quabs)?

We are truly honored to have reached this landmark. It’s incredible to have such a dedicated and passionate community. Without your participation, we wouldn’t be here today. As such, we plan to pull out all the stops and make this a Mysterium to remember. We already have events and puzzles in the works, Cyan has confirmed that they will be involved in this year’s convention (including a visit to Cyan HQ), and we are reaching out to a few “special guests”… but that’s another blog post.

As always, we need some participation from the community to make Mysterium a reality:

Logos of Mysterium Past

We’ve had many beautiful shirt logos over the years, and we want to do something interesting with them to commemorate our anniversary. Unfortunately, we are missing quite a few of them, and we only have low-res copies of several others! If you made logos in years past, or know the people that did (many are listed in our history section), please please please send the highest resolution copies you have to logo@mysterium.net. In particular:

  • Logos from 2000-2007 are either missing or low resolution
  • 2008, 2009, 2013 we have a mix of resolutions

We’ll even take high-res photos of shirts from 2000-2007, if that’s all we can get. Thank you in advance!

Logo Contest

Speaking of logos, Mysterium 2019 Logo submissions are officially open! We encourage you to integrate the number 20, “Mysterium Through the Ages,” Ahnonay, Spokane, or Cyan in your designs. More information about the design requirements and submission process can be found on the Logo Contest page. Submissions are due by by Friday, January 4th.

If your logo is selected you will receive a free Mysterium shirt, and possibly some other swag too!

Artwork

Logos aren’t the only artwork submissions this year! The fabulous Kelly/Rayne has begun spearheading a project to put together a coloring book for attendees. We also plan to make several new exclusive enamel pins for next year.

We’re trying to stagger artwork deadlines, so stay tuned for more details on how to submit artwork for those in the coming weeks.

Be sure to follow @MysteriumCon on Twitter, the Mysterium Facebook Page, or our Discord server for Mysterium 2019 and Mass Mysteria updates. We have a lot of awesome things planned for our 20th anniversary, and we can’t wait to share more with you over coming weeks and months!

Hotel Reservation Reminder and Schedule Updates

Greetings Everyone,

As Mysterium 2018 continues to approach, we wanted to share a few reminders and updates with you all.

Hotel Reservation Deadlines

Our exclusive room rate is available for booking and extension until July 4th, which is only two weeks away! Visit the Location page for booking instructions.

Please Note: When making your initial reservation, you will only be able to select a check-in as early as Friday, August 3rd and check-out as late as Monday, August 6th. If you will be staying beyond these dates, please complete this form after making your “base” reservation to request a check-in as early as Wednesday, August 1st or check-out as late as Wednesday, August 7th at our group rate. We understand this is a frustrating limitation of the booking process, but we hope the form will make this process as seamless as possible. When we have confirmed that your reservation has been extended, we will notify you via email. The change will also be reflected in your reservation confirmation details on the Holiday Inn website.

Schedule Updates

We have finalized our schedule for this year. While there is potential for unforeseen changes to occur, we are confident enough to call this finalized. Head on over to our Schedule page to have a look. You’ll find some adjustments and a new event since we posted our draft a few weeks ago.

Mysterium Unconference Topic Submissions

This year sees the return of the Mysterium Unconference, our freeform discussion groups about anything and everything. In the past two years, we’ve had some fantastic conversations about Mystunderstood Villains, D’ni Infrastructure and Transportation, the Myst/Obduction Shared Universe, and more. However, we’ve all found it hard to come up with topics on the spot.

To help facilitate the event this year, we invite fans to submit discussion topics ahead of the convention. Do you have any burning topics or theories you want to discuss? If so, please submit them using this form. Even if you are unable to attend this year, you’re welcome to submit your ideas. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

That’s about all we have for you this week. Have any questions? Looking for Room and Ride share discussions? Or just want to share your excitement for the convention? Be sure to join our Discord server or connect with us on social media.
