Welcome to Mysterium 2023! We'll kick things off with a few words and reminders from our Con-Chairs to get you started

Word-formation in the D'ni language.

The first part of this presentation will involve an explanation of how knowing a word in D'ni can be used to form other words, following the known rules.

Second will look at known D'ni words to discover patterns that point to historical rules that haven't been explained before

I plan to demonstrate Blender for Korman, the free plugin commonly used these days to create Ages for MOULa (and CC if preferred). There also may be a bit of a demonstration of ZLZ Age Importer to show how we're getting Cyan Ages converted to blends. Plus, a bit of an explanation and history for both.

From sketching wahrks in her math notes to hiding a Riven easter egg in Half-Life: Alyx, Claire “Shoom’lah” Hummel has been making Myst art for pretty much her entire life at this point. Join her for a retrospective of her Myst art over the years, and how the games have impacted her career as an art director and concept artist in the games industry.

The Cavern Today podcast has been bringing listeners news & views from the Myst fan community since 2005, and today, they'll be recording a live podcast right here at Mysterium! Join TCT as they discuss Mysterium, D'ni, Cyan and more, including a brief audience Q&A.

Fancy a challenge? Rayne and m13 have put together a unique adventure for you this year! For our returning attendees, this is the puzzle event. Except it’s slightly different this year.

Atrus left you a message. Will you be able to find it? To participate, sign up at the Registration Desk (there will be sign-up sheets). At 5pm on Friday, we will split you into groups and give you The Challenge. Gather your pencils and work together to solve puzzles, find clues, and try to figure out what in the world This Thing is for.

If your group is able to complete The Challenge before 12pm on Sunday, your group will win a special prize that the committee put together!

This year, Eleri’s group will be testing out some new mechanics and rules for Unwritten, using a LARP setting. If you don’t know what a LARP is; it’s taking a tabletop role playing game and making the action live- often in costume, with props and activities. We’re taking a page from URU for this- you will be playing *you*.

When a group of fans get a private message while at Mysterium, they find themselves investigating strange goings on… all while trying to keep the rest of the con from finding out that something could be terribly, terribly wrong…Space is limited and advance sign up is appreciated.

Quick update from con staff before we head over to Cyan HQ

When you arrive at Cyan, please make your way promptly to the church and take a seat.

We'll be spending most of the day at Cyan's headquarters in Mead, about 20 minutes from the hotel. Our time at Cyan will include a classic Cyan BBQ lunch, an opportunity to explore their campus, and a chance to meet various Cyan developers. There will also be panels featuring Cyan developers in the afternoon.
 
If you have a Myst/Cyan related costume, Saturday will be the best day to wear it.

Hannah Gamiel and Eric Anderson will give an update as to what Cyan has been up to!

To assist with crowd-control at Cyan and avoiding overwhelming any one area of their campus we will be cycling everyone through in three groups.

Groups will alternate between eating lunch (“lunch”) at the Squee Conservatory, a guided tour of the campus (“tour”) at DRC Headquarters, and an opportunity to meet some Cyan employees and guests (“meet and greet”) at Gehn’s Temple in three time slots. 

You should have received an email indicating your group for the Cyan visit. It will also be printed on your badge.

RIUM+ has a history of showing off his amazing creations at Mysterium, such as his computerised Myst book or his working D'ni clock. He's been busy working on another Thing in secret and we hear this one's shaping up to be very impressive. What will it be this time? We don't even know ourselves!

Have you ever thought that the game Tic tac toe was cool, but just didn’t have enough tic tac toe in it? Well, the D’ni apparently did.

Gemedet is a game where two players take turns placing pieces of their color in a 3 dimensional grid nine wide, nine long, and nine layers high. The objective is to complete an unbroken straight line of six pieces of the players color. Any direction the line of six can fit will count, including diagonals.

If you are curious, sets will be set out to play, and there will be a tournament Saturday during Socialization Time.

Unwritten brings the surreal worlds of Myst and Uru to tabletop role-playing. Using the popular FATE gaming engine, Unwritten gives players the chance to delve into the depths of D’ni’s troubled past, influence the future of the D’ni, and explore or even create new Ages. The D’niverse has room for any of the stories you want to tell. YOUR story is Unwritten. 
Unwritten allows both Storyteller and Players to fully flex their creative muscles unbound by traditional TTRPG rules. This allows each experience to be truly unique and catered to those gathered around the table. Utilizing a specific series of D6 styled dice, Unwritten is much more nebulous in its perception of pass/fail play. Meaning that critical failure is not near as punishing and plays much more as an interesting story beat your party will overcome. 
From the ancient eras of the D'ni to the Modern DRC and beyond, no unexplored branch will be left untended. So gather your group and delve once again into the ages of MYST...and beyond...

Not that long ago I made a "de-make" of Uru. I recreated/reimagined some of the Ages in a very simple, 2D, pixel art game engine called Bitsy (link provided at the bottom of this description).

This will be a presentation about the process of making it: why I chose the Ages from Uru that I did, my process for translating puzzles from Uru into a minimalist style, how I redesigned some of my puzzles based on player feedback to certain puzzles, and some of the interesting challenges of trying to do all this in a simplistic game engine.

Documentary filmmaker Philip Shane along with team members Randy Woods, Joshua Reinstein, Katie Postma and Elana Bogdan will take us through the latest updates in the creation of The Myst Documentary. They'll have an exclusive sneak peak of the documentary for attendees.
