Open Mic Night

Following the success of last year’s Open Mic Night, and 2018’s Mysterium Showtunes, we’re bringing Open Mic Night to the virtual world! Do you like showtunes and singing? Do you think Disney songs sound better in the original D’ni? Maybe you’ve written a poem you’d like to slam, or have a short skit?

Alone or with a group of friends, rewrite your favorite songs or create something entirely new. Choose any (family friendly) topic! Whether it be a love ballad between Atrus and Catherine, or a haiku about Atrus’s bad parenting, it’s fair game. Here are videos of some of the things people have come up with in prior years:

While we’d love to do a spontaneous event, singing doesn’t always play nice with Zoom. Combine that with trying to wrangle everyone into a fixed time slot, and you have a recipe for disaster. So instead we’re asking you to pre-record your submission and send it to us ahead of time. We’ll collect them all and stream them during our virtual Mysterium.

Rules

  • All submissions must abide by our submissions policy
  • All submissions must be family friendly
  • All submissions must be received no later than July 20th, 2020
  • Videos should be in one of these file formats: .mp4, .mov, .avi
  • Videos must not be shared publicly until after we share them during Mysterium
  • You may submit as many different pieces as you want as separate video files

Submissions

You should upload your video to Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or another private file host from which you can share the uncompressed/unedited video files. Then, email a link to the files to art@mysterium.net, with the subject “Open Mic Night”. Be sure to include your name as you want it listed on screen, the name of your submission, the name of the piece you are parodying (if any), and a link to your website (if desired).

DO NOT upload the videos to Youtube or Facebook or any other video sharing site as a means of submitting them to us, as those sites will compress the video. We need the original video files.

That’s it! Don’t stress over this too much. It’s not a competition – it’s all in good fun!
